- Barcelona Etagere Open Bookcase
The Jonathan Charles Barcelona Etagere Open Bookcase is a genuinely commanding Luxury Open Bookcase that brings together rich figured walnut veneer, champagne patina steel metalwork inspired by traditional Spanish ironwork, and four generous open shelves in a tall, architectural silhouette that looks just as impressive in a home library as it does in a grand living room, study, or designer office. Standing 81.9 inches tall, 36 inches wide, and 18 inches deep, this is the kind of Statement Open Bookcase that interior designers specify for their most discerning clients — a piece that anchors an entire room around it and makes everything displayed on its shelves look more considered and more intentional. The figured walnut veneer is bookmatched across all surfaces in that distinctive feathered pattern visible in the back panel, creating a rich, almost painterly wood grain backdrop that makes every book, object, and decorative accessory displayed on these shelves look more curated than they would anywhere else. The steel base fabricated in the style of traditional Spanish ironwork is one of the most beautiful details on the entire piece — the champagne patina finish on those elegantly curved and jointed metal stretchers giving the Barcelona Etagere that mid-century modern meets art deco quality that interior designers and serious collectors actively seek out. The champagne patina inlay running around the outer frame of the bookcase ties the walnut body to the metal base in a way that feels genuinely seamless, the warm gold tone of the metalwork complementing the rich brown walnut grain throughout without ever competing with it. Four open display shelves provide generous, well-proportioned storage and display space for books, art objects, sculptural pieces, ceramics, and decorative accessories, making this luxury Walnut Bookcase as hardworking as it is beautiful to look at. The transparent low luster finish on the walnut preserves the natural character and warmth of the wood grain rather than hiding it beneath a heavy lacquer, giving the Barcelona etagere that honest, natural quality that distinguishes genuinely well-made furniture from anything mass-produced. Whether you are furnishing a luxury home library, looking for a statement open bookcase for a living room, or simply want a Designer Etagere that becomes the most talked-about furniture piece in the room, the Jonathan Charles Barcelona Bookcase is quite simply one of the finest open bookcases available today.

Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture
Jonathan Charles Fine Furniture is the vision of Jonathan Sowter, an English furniture designer who excels at the art of fine antique reproduction. They design and manufacture the highest-quality European antique replicas as well as their own unique transitional designs, which are distributed to the best shops and interior designers throughout North America, U.K., Spain, Italy, Russia and France, just to name a few.
What makes them different is their meticulous attention-to-detail and pursuit of high-quality construction. This has propelled their company growth from just ten employees in April 2004 to over 1,400 in December 2011. Their passion for detail is also reflected in their in-house brass foundry, in which their manufacture their own hardware so that when they design a new piece of furniture they can also design one-of-a-kind pulls, hinges, locks and even keys for that piece.
It is their aim to constantly expand into new markets, while continuing to be a brand synonymous with the finer things in life.
They are craftsmen
Jonathan Charles works with artisans who display a large range of skills. They take pride in their work, which is evident in their beautifully-crafted antique replicas. They go far beyond just creating furniture that resembles English classics. They employ age-old techniques, which breathe soul and lasting-quality into their products.
They are designers
Many of their inspirations come from original antiques that Jonathan discovers in his travels. Sometimes, they will reproduce them as accurately as possible, while at other times they will take a detail that they like and design a completely new piece of furniture around that feature.
Oftentimes, they will start the design process from scratch. They gather inspiration from a variety of sources – be it a classic wallpaper design, nature, classic antiques, a rare object, or jewelry.
They never design to the limitations of their factory, and have actually expanded their factory as they have developed new skills in advanced marquetry, bronze casting, hand carving and much more.
They stand for quality
They never compromise on design and would be foolish to compromise on quality. Only the finest materials are used in their furniture. They also employ inspectors that ensure technically-sound components and design throughout the process. These experts oversee production, checking in at key transaction points so that nothing is overlooked. Before an item is packaged, it is reviewed with a keen eye and must pass a comprehensive checklist by their quality control inspector.
