Post Boxes or Letter Boxes have been an integral part of human society since the early nineteenth century and by the mid-1800s most homes had one in front to facilitate the receipt of mail. The first mailboxes created in the Victorian era and manufacturers had experimented with several designs before they created the perfect one that could keep the mail safe from the elements and theft. After much trial and error, the first red mail boxes of England came into use during the era of Queen Victoria complete with the raised VR cipher with a crown in the centre. This design remained in use for the next 75 years.
The early letter boxes were built recessed into brick walls for added safety with wide hoods to keep the rain out. You can see one of these close to Andover in Hampshire even today. Another example is the one near Ashprington in Devon that also has space for a card displayed in the front. This card gives the time of the last clearance and the expected time for the next clearance.
So you see the classic red Post Box has been around since the time of Queen Victoria and also made its way to other countries under the British rule. Over the centuries, it has assumed many avatars in different shades of red and green. However, while most letter boxes built into brick walls, you will also find those placed on a pedestal like from the era of Queen Elizabeth II or the standalone ones in Wales. Cast iron was the preferred metal for creating them, but you might find an odd wooden one like in Burlington House in London.
Letterboxes are very much around even today and have managed to hold their ground in an era of emails. Having a mailbox outside your home is a necessity but a classic one can add character to the entrance of your home. We have a collection of authentic mail boxes that are well-suited to every particular taste and are available in the wall-mounted and pillar variety.
The wall-mounted Post Boxes are available in four colours and have the perfect Victorian feel about them. Choose from the imposing black, soothing green, classic red or the smart white. Each of these letter receivers are made from rustproof aluminum making them completely weather-proof. The front panel of the box has a lock that you can open with a key, keeping your mail safe.
If you would rather prefer the standalone style, we have a two choices for you. You could either go for the pedestal or the pillar mailbox. The pedestal style is a neat mail box set atop a stand and is ideal for placing beside your door to give it that authentic Victorian look. Also constructed out of rust-proof aluminum, these postboxes are available in three traditional colours, red, black and green.
Moreover, then we come to the classic Postbox style of the pillar that is again reminiscent of those outside old houses of the Victorian era. Choose from these weather-proof creations in colours like red, green, white and black. We also have an absolutely classical English Postbox for you that crafted out of cast iron and has lots of space to accommodate large amounts of mail. It comes in traditional red colour, with two doors, one at the low down in the front and the other higher up in the back. Each door has its own key and looks regal standing in front of your house.
